The devastated cyclone SYDR of November 15, 2007 hit seriously seven districts, out of nine working districts of the networking members of Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication(BNNRC).

The affected districts are Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Pirojpur, Barisal, Bagerhat and Jhalokathi . Packing winds over 240km an hour, the cyclone demolished houses, crops, trees along its trail of devastation over an area of thousands of square kilometers.

To reduce the digital as well as knowledge divide between urban and rural areas, BNNRC established a total of 10 Rural Knowledge Centre(RKC) through its member organizations. Most of the RKCs were established at the coastal belt of Bangladesh. The monster Sydr hit one of the the Rural Knowledge Centre (RKC) along with other infrastructures of the area.

Charduani-Rural Knowledge Centre (RKC) under Patharghata upazila of Barguna district operated by Shangkalpa Trust totally destroyed, as Barguna is one of the most affected districts by the cyclone Sydr. The official death count for the district, until Tuesday was 979 and Patuakhali 424, Pirojpur 309, Barisal 88, Bhola 34 , Khulna 16.

The Rural Knowledge Centre (RKC) stands at Charduani, Patharghata where 10 feet tidal surge swept the houses and most of its inhabitants, carrying them two or three kilometers inland. The Rural Knowledge Centre(RKC) was affected acutely and all of the equipments of the RKC have been totally damaged. The equipments were computers (03), monitors (03), three UPS, Sound Boxes (06), Scanner (01), Mouse (03), Camera (01), Printer (Ledger) 01, Printer (Cannon) 01, Laminating Machine – (01), GPRS Modem –(01), CD (15), White Paper 2 rims , Photo paper 100 piece and Office documents.

BNNRC does not operate relief works directly but BNNRC coordinates relief operations related information from Dhaka.

The networking members of BNNRC are providing relief and rehabilitation to the affected areas. Shangkalpa Trust is providing in Barguna district while SPEED Trust in Patuakhali, COAST Trust in Bhola, PGUS in Pirojpur and DUS at Monpura and Hatiya island.

COAST Trust has already allocated taka 4, 50,000 from their own capacity to support 1000 families in char( small islands) areas of Bhola district.
