How can we use digital technologies to better protect the environment? This was the focus of a Twitter chat hosted by APC during Earth Day and joined by members of our network and other organisations and individuals interested in this issue.
Participants gathered around the hashtags #EarthDay and #TechandClimateJustice to have a conversation about the challenges digital technologies pose on the environment and how to address them and work for a better future. The conversation revolved around four main questions:
-
In your view, what is the most relevant impact of digital technologies on the environment?
-
What are you doing locally to take action in response to climate crises?
-
How can the repair and reuse of digital technologies help to protect the Earth?
-
What future do you envision for digital technologies and the environment? What are your dreams for the future?
To revisit the conversation, see our Twitter moment.
Let's start our Twitter chat on #TechandClimateJustice!

Environmental challenges are located in multiple social and economic areas, such as the actions of the extractive industries, consumerism, corruption, policy weaknesses, poor environmental monitoring, the impact of environmental degradation on human health, gender-based violence.

Repair and resuse are also essential strategies to address and manage e-waste. But we need commitment from the manufacturers to design more durable and accessible material and technology.#EarthDay #TechandClimateJustice

A feminist internet! One that respects life in all its forms, one towards an ethics of collective care in choices around design, extraction, production, consumption and disposal of digital technologies. #TechandClimateJustice #EarthDay

I imagine a future where technology is not a threat to people and the environment. Digital transformation can co-exist and even promote human well-being, the protection of traditional communities and of nature.#TechandClimateJustice #EarthDay
