ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION FOR

The Association for Progressive Communications is an international

network of civil society organisations dedicated to empowering and

supporting groups and individuals through the strategic use of

information and communication technologies, especially internet

technologies.

ABOUT THE CHRIS NICOL

FOSS PRIZE

Nowadays, more and more free software applications are being developed

and many of them are more reliable than proprietary software. But FOSS

is not a magical ‘no cost’ alternative to costly software. A lot of

effort is still needed if everyday users in community and civil society

organisations are to start using FOSS en masse. The Chris Nicol FOSS

Prize finalists are meeting this need by providing software adapted to

local needs, training, documentation, networking opportunities and

promoting the use and knowledge of FOSS.
